Crooked Cucumber
The Life and Zen Teaching of Shunryu Suzuki
by David Chadwick

My friend, robert, recommended this book to me. In fact, he loaned it to me. The teachings of Shunryu Suzuki and the presentation of them in this book are destined to be significant for me. Each new section begins with quotes like: "In reflecting on our problems, we should include ourselves." As if the pages and pages of beautiful narrative telling of the life of Shunryu Suzuki did not provide me with plenty to reflect upon, these brief snippets of teaching frequently are all I read in a sitting. For instance, when I read "There is no fixed moral code or standard, but you find yours when you try to teach others" I spent the rest of the evening reflecting on the truth of that statement in my life. The same for "To live in the realm of buddha nature means to die as a small being, moment after moment."
