Without a doubt she was Shelby Lynne at Bimbos' Wednesday night. The picture above just doesn't begin to approximate her stage persona on Wednesday the quote beneath it begins. If you need a little history on Shelby and a little more sense of who she is, read the Chronicle Datebook interview. Sometimes I can't help but think the guys who do the interviews for these pieces are complete idiots. Anyway, Shelby was hot. My comrade for the evening had two interesting remarks that I thought sort of summed up a good bit of the way she presented herself at Bimbo's. Jenny's first question was; "Is that her real voice?" She said this in response to Shelby talking/hollering in her big ol' southern (South Alabama) drawl. Later in the show Jenny said; "I'm trying to figure out if she's drunk." For me, the show was a bit of a shock just 'cause I was expecting some kind of slightly sophisticated southern presentation of Shelby. But, quite the contrary she came out in leather pants and a Johnny Cash t-shirt drinking beer from a plastic cup and acting like she'd just gotten to the show from her double-wide, probably after riding in the back of the pick-up. For the record, she lives these days in Palm Springs and I don't know about the pick-up.
