During my recent trip to Florida, I spent about four days in Key West at an "Alternative, Adult Resort." Fancying myself an alternative adult, I pushed my previous limits of public exposure to new levels. With Start Where Your Are in hand I lost my suit and joined the other folks lounging around the pool. I'm not sure what was more odd, me being naked in a public/private place or me being naked reading a buddhist book on compassionate living in a public private place. At the risk of sounding like my least favorite network news channel, I'll report and let you decide.

I wrote most of this a couple of weeks ago.
I cried myself to sleep last night
and snored myself awake
I'm weary with the morning light
with little left at stake...

The image of the eyes of a young woman I saw drawing with colorful chalk on the sidewalk last week while panhandling with her mohawked boyfriend looking on has returned to me daily since then. [more]

My mother is visiting for a couple of weeks. I got to spend the last three days traveling around with her and her buddy visiting various sites and people in Northern California. I drove the two women, who have something in excess of 150 years of life experience between them, as they reminisced and joked their way around Oroville, through redwood forests to Eureka and back to Oroville. I had two dates during the last week with women. I met one woman through a kind of fix up thing by a friend and I met the other through online interactions. Both were within about 4 years of my age. [more]

Over the last several weeks, I'd resolved in my mind to focus more energy on cultivating relationships with women close to my age. I've struggled with how to create opportunities for myself to be around and maybe date women relatively close to my age. In my mind, I've bemoaned the fact that a great number of my significant relationships are with women in their twenties, who can't even hook me up with their friends 'cause their all in their twenties, too. This morning I wrote about how I was estranged from the Presbyterian church I grew up attending and Christian churches generally. I wrote; "Don't ask me to have faith. Why? What basis is there for this faith? Exactly! If there was any basis it wouldn't be faith." This evening I began reading a book by the Dalai Lama that I picked up at the library this afternoon because it was about meditation. In the beginning of the book he appears to address the very statement of concern I was making this morning. [more]

I've told the story several times in the last few days of the beginning of my estrangement from the church I grew up in and Christianity in general. I'm feeling like writing about it a little, especially within the context of my reflections of my experience with the Dalai Lama recently. [more]

Yesterday and today some old friends showed up outside of the Shoreline Amphitheatre. If you're from San Francisco or Berkeley you probably know them. Maybe you've seen them around Powell Street Station? I don't believe these folks are the immediate family of Fred Phelps, but they're kissin' cuzzins. [more]

Much of today's teaching dealt with "emptiness" and what that means in Buddhism and the Heart Sutra in particular. Below is a summary from the Institute of Tibetan Classics. [more]

His Holiness the Dalai Lama spoke today about something he called the High Throne Syndrome. He described lamas competing with each other or at least in the eyes of the uneducated masses via the clothing they wear, the number of horses in their procession, the hats on their heads or the heights of their thrones. He told of two lamas equal in stature having their thrones of equal height made of cushions side-by-side for teaching. One lama's supporter places a piece of slate between the cushions of his lama's throne. The lamas start out on an equal basis, but as the teaching goes on the other lama's throne settles more and he is lower than the other.

The first day of the Heart of Wisdom Teachings, while engaged in somewhat distractedly by me, were very helpful. I was pleased to hear His Holiness The Dalai Lama set the stage for and began his commentary on "The Heart of the Perfection of Wisdom" today. [more]
