05/17/2001 Entry: "Developing the wisdom that perceives the ultimate nature of reality"
The first day of the Heart of Wisdom Teachings, while engaged in somewhat distractedly by me, were very helpful. I was pleased to hear His Holiness The Dalai Lama set the stage for and began his commentary on "The Heart of the Perfection of Wisdom" today.
Things I Heard Today That I'd Like to Remember
This morning HH spoke of his transition from believing as a young man that as many people as possible should convert to Buddhism to his belief today that people need many paths. He said that he believes that we must have religions that are appropriate to the context of the believer. He distinguished his belief that there is a need for many religions from the notion that any person needs many religions. He was very clear that he believes that each person must develop her practice with focus on one relgious path.
Much of the teaching is on emptiness. All things are empty, including the concept of emptiness. There is no separate self. All suffering comes from the illusion of a separate self.
